Why Your Business Doesn't Rank in Delhi / Mumbai / Bangalore — and How to Fix It

Every week we audit websites for businesses in India's major metros that have been "doing SEO" for months — and still don't rank. The reasons are almost always the same 7 mistakes. Here they are with the exact fixes.

7
Most common reasons businesses fail to rank in major Indian cities
85%
of local ranking failures trace back to GBP or on-page issues

Typical time to see improvement after fixing these issues

Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile Is Incomplete or Unverified

In hyper-competitive cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, an incomplete GBP simply won't rank. Every field matters — business hours, service areas, service list, description, photos, Q&A. Unverified profiles (the blue "claim this business" prompt) get almost no local ranking consideration.

Fix: Verify your profile, complete every field, add 20+ real photos, and post at least twice a month using GBP Posts. Check your profile on mobile — this is how most users will see it.

Reason 2: No Location-Specific Landing Pages

If you're a CA firm in Delhi trying to rank for "CA in Connaught Place" and "CA in Saket" — you need separate pages for each area. A single "CA in Delhi" page can't rank well for every neighbourhood. This is one of the most common oversights in local SEO and one of the easiest to fix.

Reason 3: Your NAP Is Inconsistent Across the Web

Google cross-references your business address across JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, your website, and your GBP. If your address says "B-24, DLF Phase 2" on your website but "B 24 DLF Phase II" on JustDial, that inconsistency signals unreliability. Audit and fix your NAP across every citation source.

A citation audit is one of the first things we do for every local SEO client — inconsistencies are almost universal.

Reason 4: Competitors Have Far More Reviews

In major Indian cities, the businesses ranking in the Google Maps top 3 typically have 50–200+ reviews. If your competitors have 80 reviews and you have 12, you're fighting uphill. Reviews aren't just a ranking signal — they directly convert searchers into callers.

Reason 5: Your Website Has No Local On-Page Signals

Your title tag should say "Interior Designer in Koramangala, Bangalore" — not just "Interior Designer." Your content should mention your city, neighbourhood, and service area naturally. Your contact page should have an embedded Google Map. None of this happens automatically — it requires deliberate on-page SEO work.

Reason 6: You're Targeting the Wrong Keywords

Many businesses target highly competitive head terms ("plumber in Mumbai") when long-tail local terms ("emergency plumber Bandra Mumbai") have high intent and far less competition. Our keyword research process specifically identifies these high-intent, lower-competition local terms.

Reason 7: No Ongoing Optimisation

Local SEO isn't a one-time setup. Google's algorithm updates, your competitors keep optimising, and new review patterns emerge constantly. Businesses that treat local SEO as an ongoing activity — not a one-time task — consistently outrank those that don't.
